Our South African riding safari partners offer 6, 8 or 10-day itineraries safaris during which guests are accommodated in different lodges whilst exploring 75,000 acres of prime African bushveld from the backs of well-schooled mainly African Boerperd horses on rides of up to 7 hours a day. The Karongwe and Greater Makalali private game reserves lie beneath a dramatic backdrop provided by the Drakensberg mountains, and showcase ecosystems ranging from thick bush to open plains, woodlands, hills and kopjes. Extensive river systems support an impressive population of flora and fauna, and wildlife that includes buffalo, black and white rhino, cheetah, crocodile, elephant, giraffe, hippo, leopard, lion and numerous other species. Endemic nocturnal wildlife includes porcupine, aardvark, civet, caracal, genet, serval and spring hare.
Wait A Little’s headquarters camp of four luxury thatched tented rooms is located inside the Karongwe Private Game Reserve beside the seasonal Makuthswe River. The area is blessed with almost year-round sunshine, although it can get hot in the summer months between October and March when temperatures average averaging 32 degrees, winter from April to August is a sunny season of chilly early mornings, warm to hot middays and much cooler nights. Accommodation used during rides includes a stunning private lodge overlooking a large dam frequented by wildlife within the Greater Makalali Game Reserve, where facilities include an infinity pool and wrap around viewing platform. Consisting of 5 luxurious chalets, Clive’s Safari Lodge is also within the Makalali Game Reserve and overlooks a waterhole popular with lion and hyena. Guests can also spend a night sleeping beneath the stars at a fly camp perched on the highest point on the Karongwe Game Reserve with far reaching and spectacular views.
